OCEURTRIFICPATRIONDANUDCPOTLSIC.IES Fairtrade Lidl Ireland/Northern Ireland | Sustainability Progress Report 2018/19 Through Fairtrade , farming groups in developing countries gain the opportunity to strengthen their villages and families living and working conditions. Fairtrade pays a minimum price which is set to cover the cost of sustainable production, and to protect producers from the price fluctuations of the market. It also pays a Fairtrade premium which allows workers and farmers to receive an additional sum of money which goes to a communal fund to be used to improve their social, economic and environmental conditions. We are proud to have been the first retailer in Ireland to offer a range of products sold under the Fairtrade Cocoa Programme standard. This enables small scale cocoa farmers to benefit by selling more of their cocoa on Fairtrade terms. Farmers earn a fair price for their cocoa and receive a Fairtrade Premium to support democratically agreed local community programmes.
